File a Free Tax Extension
Need more time to file? Get an automatic extension to October 15 at no cost. Federal extension filing is always free with TaxFileReturn.
How to file your extension
- Create an account or sign in to TaxFileReturn.
- Go to the Account menu (top right after signing in).
- Select File an extension and follow the steps.
- Submit your extension — you’ll get confirmation right away.
- You can sign back in anytime to view or print your extension confirmation.
Important: payment deadline is not extended
Filing an extension only gives you more time to file your return. It does not extend the deadline to pay any tax you owe. To avoid penalties and interest, you must still pay any amount owed by the original deadline (generally April 15). You can pay when you file your extension — estimate what you owe and submit the payment with your extension request.
New filing deadline
Once your extension is accepted, your deadline to file your return is extended to October 15 (e.g. October 15, 2026 for 2025 tax year returns).
Cost
Federal extension filing is free ($0). State extensions may have a fee depending on your state; you’ll see the cost when you file.
